How to get healthy-looking hair

Dry, damaged hair will never be in style, no matter how crazy the trends get (nostril hair, we’re looking at you!). Many of us are on the seemingly ever-lasting quest for healthier, happier looking hair, particularly with heat utensils, cheap dyes and leaving it too long between hair cuts beginning to take its toll. Keeping your hair in tip-top condition in winter is more important than ever, especially when your mane is exposed to harsher conditions.

Here at Central Studio, we love our clients, and like to lend a helping hand whenever possible, allowing you to make the most out of your re-style, tidy up, or hair colour, Bristol. Below we’ve come up with a few ways in which you can your hair looking and feeling fabulous in the run-up to party season!

Reconsider your shampoo and conditioner schedule

It’s the oldest tale in the hair care book that washing your hair less often makes it look healthier. Unlike myths and legends, however, there is plenty of truth to the notion that, when it comes to hair, the dirtier the cleaner! Washing your locks less often will allow your natural oils to nourish the scalp, and although dealing with second-day, greasy-looking hair is far from ideal, it will be worth it in the long run, and the chances are that the only person noticing it is you! There are plenty of hairstyles that can help to combat the appearance of grease, and some that work even better on second or third day hair. If attempting a plait, for example, the natural oils help to bind strands of hair together, making for neater-looking braids.

Ice Ice Showers

Granted, with winter fast-approaching, this is not what you’re wanting to hear! But it’s not all bad news. Rinsing your hair for just 30 seconds, or as long as you can stand it, in ice cold water will help to close the hair cuticle and retain moisture. There are said to be many benefits of using cold water including natural detoxification, promoting health and shine, slowing down hair loss and preventing frizz. Again, this may not be something that can work for everyone, but it’s surely worth a try! We recommend rinsing your hair with cold water at the beginning of the shower, meaning you can ramp up the temperature straightaway to warm you up for the rest of the shower.

Turn down the heat

It’s not rocket science, that the less heat you apply to your hair the better. Again, not the best news for those that straighten their hair every day, but there’s plenty of ways you can cut down. Opt for Au natural wherever possible, letting it air dry with a touch of salt spray, or sleeping with plaits in for next day waves. Sure, blow-drying your hair every now and again is to be expected, and the odd straightening session won’t cause much harm, but making a conscious effort to minimise how much you use heat appliances will help you achieve healthier, happier-looking hair in no time! Don’t rush the brush

Healthy hair needs to be brushed regularly, but that doesn’t mean tearing through your locks for ten seconds before you walk out the door. Wet hair is more fragile and susceptible to breakage, so trade a brush for a comb, working from the ends upwards for optimum results. Hair brushes are also a breeding ground for bacteria, especially if they are covered in hair, oil and product build-up. Clean your brushes once a month with warm water and a small amount of shampoo and always remove the excess hair that gets stuck.

We hope this has given you a bit of an insight on how you can keep your hair looking fabulous this winter! If you’ve got a party or an event coming up, we recommend getting a hair treatment in the week before, allowing your locks to look as shiny and healthy as possible for the big day!
