As autumn creeps ever closer, many women will opt for a colour change in keeping with the season, embracing all the hot shades of the moment. It’s exciting, it’s something different and it helps to create a new you. However, many are put off colouring their hair because of their mum’s friends next door neighbour suggesting that it can cause significant damage to your lovely locks.
As with many rumours, there is some truth behind this statement, but there are also a multitude of hair care tips, tricks, and routines you can adapt to minimise these effects. While dry, damaged hair is certainly undesirable, it definitely isn’t unavoidable. Follow our tips for the best way to maintain your coloured hair whilst keeping the colour vibrant, and you’ll be booking in for that hair colour, Bristol in no time!
This will be difficult for many, but after you’ve had your hair coloured and you’re feeling fabulous, try not to shampoo for at least 48 hours. The longer the better if you ask us, and if you feel like you can last for 72 hours’ sans wash, we salute you! This will give the colour time to set and ensure you don’t wash away any of your stylist’s hard work. Yes, we know you’ve got a shiny new do, but quit touching it to help your hair stay grease-free for longer.
As Ned Stark once said, winter is coming, and so the last thing you’ll want to hear about are the benefits of a cold shower. Fear not, for we are by no means saying that freezing cold showers are the way forward. Meet somewhere in the middle, and try and stick with lukewarm temperatures when washing your hair. Hot water can tempt the colour out of hair faster, stripping the tones because it opens the surface of the hair strand, allowing molecules to escape. Not ideal.
While this may seem obvious, it’s worth mentioning that colour-protective shampoos and conditioners tend to do what they say on the packet. It’s a bit of a no brainer really, but they form a protective layer on the surface of the hair that helps protect and maintain your colour. If you’ve opted for a cooler tone, say something icy, sulfate-free shampoo is the one for you, as they won’t strip away any natural oils that also protect colour, so invest in one ASAP. You will be able to ask your stylist about the best product options for you; they know best!
We all have those cow licks, kinks and random ringlets that need to be flattened as soon as possible, but it’s worth remembering that coloured hair is more vulnerable to damage from heat. Curling tongs, blow dryers and straighteners are the worst culprits, so opt for heatless hairstyles whenever possible. If you simply must, be sure to use heat protective sprays where possible and set the heat as low as you can on all utensils.

Ok, so maybe don’t apply this to your personal hygiene routine, and we highly recommend a shower every day, but perhaps stop reaching out for the shampoo bottle so often? Hair wash warriors and every-dayers may struggle a bit more with this, but you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to cut back. Not only is this better for your coloured hair, but the costs saved in shampoo and conditioner can be put towards your next hair appointment! Get creative, and consider different hairstyles that may be able to hide any signs of grease; braids are always better on second-day hair!
Once your hair has been transformed, remember to keep on top of your split ends. Every head of hair is different, but on average, you should arrange a trim for every 6-8 weeks. Hair is more prone to damage after being coloured, and especially after being bleached, so keeping on top of those dead ends and breakages is more important than ever!
We hope these tips help to keep your hair looking more fabulous than ever, and let you embrace the transformation you’ve always wanted!
